On the way we recommend a stop in the holy city of Cholula. There you will get to know the largest pyramid in the world (yes, that’s right. Strictly speaking, it is even larger than the famous pyramids in Egypt).

From there you can enjoy a beautiful view of the impressive Popocatépetl volcano, which is still active today. If you are interested, you can also visit the Los Remedios Monastery and the San Francisco Acatepec Church.

Then your road trip continues to the center of Puebla. Discover the 4th largest city in Mexico on your own and visit the most important sights such as the Cathedral and the Church of Santo Domingo. We recommend that you try the national dish Mole Poblano in one of the many good restaurants.

On the eve of Día de los Muertos, you can see the famous, man-high Catrina skeletons in the streets throughout the city center of Puebla, as well as colorful Day-of-the-Dead decorations in the streets, pubs and restaurants.

01.11.2022Puebla - Oaxaca - Dia de los Muertos Night tour

After a hearty breakfast in Puebla, you continue to Oaxaca, the cradle of Dia de los Muertos. There you will learn all about the customs and celebrations of the Mexican Day of the Dead the next few days.

Upon your arrival in Oaxaca, we recommend that you take a walking tour of the pretty city. Visit the Zócalo, the Cathedral, the Amparo Museum, the Rosario Chapel, the Palafoxiana Library and the colorful El Parián handicraft market.

During the day you will be amazed by the colorful Día de los Muertos decorations that can be seen on every house and in every alley. But when it gets dark, it gets even more beautiful and impressive!

Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead to commemorate their loved ones who have passed away. The belief is that the departed souls come back to their families, celebrate with them and enjoy being together. Therefore, altars are set up, which are decorated over and over with the bright orange marigolds (Spanish cempasuchil) and the favorite food of the deceased.

Walk through the colorful streets, look at the altars in the dark, taste the typical delicacies and take part in the festivities in downtown Oaxaca.

Should I expect a lot of visitors on Dia de los Muertos?

Oaxaca is a small, authentic Mexican city. Dia de los Muertos is the biggest and most important festival of the year. It must be expected that there will be many visitors. We therefore recommend starting the excursions, e.g. to Monte Alban, Teotitlan and Hierve el Agua, as early as possible in the day. This is the best way to avoid the crowds of visitors.

What are the cancellation conditions? What if I am not allowed to travel due to Covid-19?

We offer you a Covid-19 security package with which you can cancel or rebook your trip free of charge up to 7 days before the start of the trip. You can find more information about this here.
